The Center for  Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science at Fuzhou University  (DIMACS-FU) was inaugurated on December 1, 2002, by Professor Wu Minsheng,  president of Fuzhou University, and Academician Wu Wenjun, the first highest  state science award laureate. Academician Yang Le, president of the Academy of  Mathematics and Systems Sciences at Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered a  congratulatory speech at the opening ceremony. Academician Wan Zhexian was  appointed the Chairman of Academic Committee of the Center and Professor Fan  Genghua was appointed the Director of the Center.

Discrete mathematics  is a key subject in the "211 Project" at Fuzhou University. The opening of the  center provides a platform for a speedy development of this subject in Fuzhou  University. The main research areas of the center are: (1) graph theory and  combinatorics; (2) mathematical methods in very large scale integration (VLSI)  design; (3) optimization theory and algorithms. Currently, the center undertakes  a project in the National Basic Research Program (973 Program): "Graph Theory  and Algebraic Methods in VLSI Design", and a key project of the National Science  Foundation of China: "Subgraph Covering and Subgraph Existence". In 2007, the  center was granted the Key Laboratory of Discrete Mathematics with Applications  by the Ministry of Education. Academician Ma Zhiming was appointed the chairman  of the academic committee, and Professor Fan Genghua the director, of the key  laboratory.

Currently, the  center has 10 members (all having PhD degrees) and 58 postgraduate students.  Among the 10 members, there are 6 full professors and 4 associate professors ,  with 6 being approved PhD supervisors. The center has a PhD program on applied  mathematics and MS programs on basic mathematics, applied mathematics,  operations research and control theory. The center occupies an area of  approximately 3000 square meters, which provides its members and postgraduate  students with the first-class environment for work and  study.
